COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH 1
GOOD VS. WELL
Good is an adjective and well is an adverb. Many people, including many native speakers,
incorrectly use the adjective form good, rather than the adverb well.
a) He played the piece very 1) good 2) well.
b) In my opinion, he's a 1) good 2) well tennis player.
c) People think he is quite a 1) good 2) well speaker.
d) Jane was quite 1) good 2) well at the paino.
e) Our neighbour speaks Italian 1) good 2) well.
IT'S VS. ITS
It's is the contracted form of It is. This form is used in sentences using "they"
as the subject of the sentence with the verb "to be" used as either the helping verb
(e.g. It's going ..., It's raining ...) or the principal verb of the sentence. Its is the possessive
pronoun form. This form is used to express that "it" has a specific quality, or that something
belongs to "it".
a) I think 1) it's 2) its time to go home.
b) 1)It's 2) Its colour is blue.
c) Mary laid her child in 1)it's 2)its bed for the night.
d) Could you give this back to Susan? I think 1)it's 2) its hers.
e) Sometimes 1) it's 2) its best just to give up.
